Health Information Exchange

Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) are critical to improving healthcare delivery and outcomes by enabling the seamless sharing of patient information across different healthcare providers. In Zambia, HIEs play a pivotal role in integrating various healthcare data systems with SmartCare, the country’s centralized Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. This integration ensures that health information is easily stored, accessed, and upstreamed, facilitating better patient care and public health monitoring.

Digital Health Integrations

Here are the current integrations being implemented with the SmartCare System:

Smartcare & DISA

DISA (Data Intensive System Applications) is the national laboratory information system. This integration is to allow the electronic transmission of lab information between Smartcare and Disa.

Smartcare & DHIS2

DHIS2 (District Health Information System 2) is a platform used to capture information such as HIA1 (Health information analysis 1) and HIA2, including indicators related to child health, reproductive health, malaria control etc. This integration enables the transmission of HIA1 and HIA2 data from SmartCare to DHIS2

Smartcare & eLMIS

eLMIS (Electronic Logistics Management Information System) is the national medical supply chain system. This integration is to allow the transmission of medical prescription and dispensation data between Smartcare and eLMIS.

Smartcare & CBS

The HIV Case-Based Surveillance (CBS) is a system designed to collect, manage, and analyse HIV-related data for monitoring and controlling the spread of HIV/AIDS. The integration will enable CBS to collect patient data from Smartcare.
